ICYMI, there's a whole thing going on right now involving popular essayists on YouTube and plagiarism accusations, and the hbomberguy and Todd in the Shadows videos on James Somerton are the reason why. To sum it up: Somerton is the most evident but not the only example of how video essays sometimes are utter bullshit that steal original creative work for the sake of "content creation" and at its most virulent spout some really damning rhetoric that just gets absorbed, unchallenged, by an audience.
I'm not even that much into video essays, but I've seen a few, including one (or two? I have vague memories of seing the "Monsters in the Closet" one at some point) by Somerton himself. To be completely honest, I didn't know video essays were a niche until recently. So while I don't have much stake in the topic itself, I was still so completely fascinated by the videos I linked up there that it: a) inspired me to write even more, because goddamn, at least my silly little fics come from my silly little brain!, and b) made me more upset than ever about things I already feel pretty upset about in relation to the internet and how we behave in this pixelated wild west.
