the boyz styling appreciation post
or, I was asked what my favorite TBZ styling was and felt compelled to rank my favorites 🥳
I need to preface this by saying that as someone who's used to RBW artists and their unfortunate styling, I very much appreciate TBZ's styling. I think creker/IST knows what to do with them, has been more right than wrong when it comes to outfits, and whenever they make an effort I find the result just stunning.
that being said, I compiled all the favorites I could think of/find with a quick search (thanks sona for the help!), from least to most liked, but there's a big chance I forgot something. it's 6 years of boyz and I've only been here for half of them, after all!! my final opinion after making this post is that I love tbz styling and I've been catered to far more than I've been disappointed, as we're about to see...

as sangyeon would say, simple is best!!! I don't think I was super into any "ddd" looks but this one is cute, and I love black and orange mixed together...

I have nothing against "no air" era looks in general, I think? they're just not among my favorites, but they're not *bad*, either. this one, though, I liked! kevin in particular really suits this look. it kinda does feel like creker said "ok, well, this isn't a cute boyz next door song, this is their first concept that sounds more mature, so we should have them in suits! but since they're still, well, boyz, let's get jackets twice their size so it looks like they got it from their dads and uncles and bedazzle the hell out of it." LOL whatever the case, it worked, I liked this look. it works well with the choreo too.

the ONLY thing I would change about this look would be the harness/suspenders on milcobhwall, but other than that? really cute outfit and I love that they had different versions of different colors for it lol sunric's outfits are classic to me, 2ju looked great, jacob was cute...

despite the entire fandom apparently hating the first one (?), I actually really liked it? I think they did a good job making it ~christmassy summery~, and it just suited the vibe of the stage. the second one made me miss the beach SO MUCH lol

you can't tell me jucob don't look FANTASTIC here... personally I loved kevric's looks, but I think all of them were perfectly characterized for the stage.

making this list made me realize I'm not into individual outfits as a rule, I prefer them to match somehow, so if we're doing individual outfits that don't seem to match at all, they gotta at least be creative and colorful for me to be into it... the pink ones for KCON LA were perfect in that sense! and that "bloom bloom" one shouldn't really work but it does, because again: colors, in different tones and different stylings, but still forming a full picture! the effect is so good.

debuting as literally just some school boyz in uniforms was a cute and smart move imo, and I like how they kept bringing that back for the first few years. they WERE just boyz... now they might be pushing the envelope a little bit if they wear school uniforms, but that's why we have sports uniforms!!! and yeah, I did like the "giddy up" jerseys, that was cute.

now, the thing is... I liked the styling this era, and these 3 in particular might be my favorites. I liked the black and red theme, I thought the outfits aligned with the concept well for the most part, and so on. but I wasn't 100% here for it? I think my biggest gripe was specifically with some of hak's, sunwoo's, and younghoon's outfits, but on the other hand I fell head over heels for hyunjae this era (his looks were PERFECT!!!) and really, really loved kevric's outfits. so it was sorta 50/50 to me...
like, these?

loved them! legendary!!! but I think the only time I liked most/almost all of their outfits at once was for 201009 mubank (?) (they might've used these again later, I can't recall).

and this is not the first time I'll single out eric's looks but for this era his were consistently my favorites...

...but mainly these three, in this order. eric's "love all trust few do wrong to no one" jacket is one of my favorite pieces ever (wish I could have it but I guess it's crazy expensive?), hyunjae looked incredible in that black shirt with mesh sleeves, haknyeon in the romeo+juliet shirt with the bandana was out of this world, sunwoo rocked the shit out of those shorts, and every single one of chanhee's outfits was cute!
ETA: completely forgot about the red and white lifeguard outfits when I wrote the post. I loved those too! particularly jusun's outfits.
even if I'm not big on individual fits, "thrill ride" was just That Era... everything was right in the world.

full disclosure, this might be just because hak's look here is one of my favorite hak looks of all time but they all look good! sunwoo's look is another one I loved. I like how this is very specific (racer outfits? I guess?) but they made it work for each one of them. all-black outfits can kinda suck the fun out of a stage for me, especially if it's for a bright song, but considering how things were going for "whisper" era? this is an improvement :')
for reference, I think I only really liked this outfit from the entirety of theb zone / whisper era... bbangjukyu looked gorgeous!

best I can do is screenshots but man, I LOVED this stage so much and the outfits are a part of it. it was just the right choice to have them wear dark pants + flowy white shirts with even more flowy bits for some members (like nyukyu). it made the choreo even PRETTIER, and just so nightmarish. perfect, 10/10.

sorry for being basic, but aren't these pretty?? I think so! it's matching outfits but the keywords make it so each look represents each member, and I just think the "right here" choreo looked very pretty with these jackets lol definitely made the choreo feel even more dynamic to me.

this era was flawless on all accounts in my personal opinion, and even though I didn't find *all* outfits the prettiest, for the most part I really liked them! particularly the first 2 here and most outfits of the 3rd (hak, hyunjae, sunwoo, kevin, BBANG... all great). (needless to say I loved the 2 eric looks from the mv but apparently I like all eric outfits ever???)

if you don't think this was GENIUS we won't agree on anything else!!! kevin, eric, sangyeon, sunwoo, chanhee... I'd not only love to see them wear something like this again but I'd also wear these myself. I'm a big bell-bottoms/flares enthusiast. if I'm not mistaken this is when eric invented the color blue.

as much as I'm against the idea of armed forces in general, I can't help it, I love the aesthetics lol and these were cute, matching yet individually unique with their specific go-to motifs. (doesn't jacob look perfect???) these looked sorta uncomfortable to perform in, though, so a once in a lifetime thing I was happy to witness.
and I mean, yes, I AM biased towards longcoat!younghoon...

listen, idk why I like their kcon looks so much either, but apparently I do... the first one is my favorite: the "LOOK AT THEM!" meme but it's me screaming "LOOK AT MILSUN!" I really, really liked chanhee's and eric's outfits there too, and jacob was just our very own prince. bbangkyu looked very bbangkyu too, which means perfect in my book.
the second one had a really cute hak and a just nice ensemble look in general. jumilric were so cute too!
and as for the last, OFC it's suncobric... cobric in particular looked perfect :')

not even the biggest fan of leather in general and I liked this era a lot! maybe I'm biased because this was my first era? but I feel like this was the era where the stylists started to dress them according to their body type and I personally loved it... chanhee usually got high-waisted pants, hak and changmin got shorter upper pieces (with hak getting outfits that highlighted his waist and changmin ones that highlighted his shoulders), eric started his #sexy_guy era experimenting with showing skin and trying more formfitting pieces, and so on. everything felt so well thought-out...

particularly younghoon (one of my favorite stylings on him!!), eric, and kevin. you can't just give me silver haired younghoon in a long coat, eric and kevin in their most sexy fits to date and not expect me to love it... the hat on chanhee was a really nice touch too!

self-explanatory, right?! in 2020 mama hyunjae we trust! amen 🙏

I don't think I disliked *any* of the rtk/kingdom outfits. my absolute favorites must be "o sole mio" (flawless) and "danger" (everything to me). I mean...
hello? HELLO???

and another one FOR THE HISTORY BOOKS:

also particularly loved these:

(yes I know hyunjae's had an inner shirt and this is the behind the scenes but listen... it works like this too...)

maybe I'm just into shiny things LOL but these were so gorgeous! eric and kevin in particular (again), but everyone looks good here. the details were stunning. and iirc the members said their stylists did it by hand, right? all the pins? if so, that was some beautiful work.

NEED I SAY ANYTHING? one of my favorites (if not my overall favorite) eric look, 98line were all fantastic (look at chanhee!!!), bbangsun with long coats and bbang just looking the most princely in the whole world, hyunjae a KING, and I'll never not like hak with his waist outlined/marked (he looks like a fancy lord from a pirate movie here). these all look very different and specific to each member, and yet they match perfectly, which I guess is my favorite look on tbz ever.
-
if I were to do this for each member, the list could turn out somewhat different - I mean, "reveal (catching fire)" sangyeon? "breaking dawn" juyeon? "ddd" jacob? but like I said, I hardly ever dislike stylistic choices when it comes to tbz, so we could be here for months while I list every single outfit ever lol
I need to preface this by saying that as someone who's used to RBW artists and their unfortunate styling, I very much appreciate TBZ's styling. the ONLY thing I would change about this look would be the harness/suspenders on milcobhwall, but other than that? really cute outfit and I love that they had different versions of different colors for it lol sunric's outfits are classic to me, 2ju looked great, jacob was cute...
19th place: these "lip gloss" era looks

17th place: color-coordinated outfits

making this list made me realize I'm not into individual outfits as a rule, I prefer them to match somehow, so if we're doing individual outfits that don't seem to match at all, they gotta at least be creative and colorful for me to be into it... the pink ones for KCON LA were perfect in that sense! and that "bloom bloom" one shouldn't really work but it does, because again: colors, in different tones and different stylings, but still forming a full picture! the effect is so good.
16th place: uniforms!

15th place: (almost) everything "the stealer" era

now, the thing is... I liked the styling this era, and these 3 in particular might be my favorites. One of my favourite stylings was for their KCON Thailand '18 cover performance of SNSD's 'The Boys' and GOT7's 'Hard Carry'. The billowy shirts and dramatic poofy sleeves, the thigh-hugging skinny pants with that chain dropping from the belt. It was pleasing seeing them move in those outfits.

ISN'T IT? <333 I love that look on him so muuuuch!!!
and omg yes, those were perfect, you're absolutely right T_T and I like that it's matchy-matchy but still slightly different for each one of them, so the full-picture effect is great but the close-ups are just as satisfying. another 10/10.
