Of course, our priority is always to make sure everyone is safe and out of harm’s way. That’s what we strive for.”

The reporter is asking something else, the camera still trained on Jaehyun’s face—or rather, Now’s face, since he still has the caramel mask over his eyes—but Kevin turns the volume down a notch.

“Ugh. He’s so full of himself,” he says, knowing Jacob will hear him from the table. “Look at him! He makes it sound like he did it all by himself. As if I wasn’t there going full Spider-Man 2 to keep that entire second floor from collapsing.”

Oh, thank you, but it wasn’t all me,” Jaehyun says on the TV, as if on cue, with a shy little smile. “It was thanks to Riddler, Nouveau, and Neon, and our combined effort today, that we could prevent what could’ve been a tragedy. This town has many heroes, and that only works to our advantage, thankfully.”

From the table, Jacob goes, “You were saying?”

“He still thinks he’s our leader, or something,” Kevin argues, weakly. He’s grasping at straws here and he knows it. The upper half of his supersuit is bunched up around his waist, and he pushes it a bit further down, annoyed, to stop it from tickling him over his shirt. “Just because he’s ridiculously pretty and smart doesn’t mean he’s above us, though.”

“Oh, so he’s ridiculously pretty and smart?”

Kevin turns around to glare at Jacob, but Jacob isn’t even looking at him, still focused on his laptop. “Don’t start.”

“I just think you should ask him out already. You’re not fooling anyone, Kev.”

“Excuse me? I’m not trying to fool anyone. You should see him at the training center,” Kevin points an accusatory finger to the TV, where Jaehyun is still smiling and nodding along to what the anchors are saying. “Making jokes and winking all the time and looking so infuriatingly—”

“Hot?”

“Yeah! I mean, no! Smug. I meant smug. Stop trying to confuse me!”

“I don’t need to do that for you, buddy,” Jacob says.

Kevin narrows his eyes, but before he can think of a comeback, Jaehyun’s voice cuts through his thoughts again.

Ah, well, if I can, sure,” he’s saying on the TV. “I’d like to thank my fellow heroes one more time. I’d offer to buy all of them dinner, to celebrate today, but I know not everyone would be up for it...”

He looks straight at the camera, and Kevin recoils, feeling as if he’s looking at him.

Riddler? What do you think? My treat.”

Jaehyun finishes it off with a wink, to the delighted reactions of the anchors who, like the rest of the country, love how sweet and playful Jaehyun—well, Now—can be in front of the cameras. Then he hides his embarrassed smile, just as the image cuts to the studio with the anchors.

“Again,” Jacob says, amused, while Kevin stares at the TV in stunned silence. “You were saying?”
