younghoon's hongeojjim

I'm so not in the mood to do anything, I spent all my free time this weekend on my phone being picky about what youtube videos I feel like watching... and turns out the answer is not many!

but something I've been thinking about lately is that I love learning/studying korean. from a linguistic point of view, it's such a fun langugae to me. an SOV language where you don't gender everything and you conjugate verbs but also add MORE things to it?! all those suffixes are like catnip to the forever dormant linguistics enthusiast in me. my romance language brain has a field trip whenever I think about it.

for instance: once I (finally, and sort of) understood why you use -다고 -라고 -대, my life changed. (for the better. I hold this video very close to my heart.) why doesn't every language have something like this?! (shut up, saussure, that's rhetorical.) quoting people by just repeating what they said and adding a little suffix is so practical. 하는/라는 and -ㄴ are excellent too. *adjectifies your nouns and verbs* get grammared, you fool!!!

the reason I'm thinking about this tonight in particular is because I got reminded of one of my favorite bbangkev moments ever, which is of course a video of younghoon trying to speak english with kevin. I've joked before about writing theses on threerang's different levels of comfort with their languages but younghoon is such a fascinating member too when it comes to the way he uses language. his brain is wired to korean in such a clear way that when he speaks english you can tell he's translating a korean sentence word by word in his brain, using korean syntax.

like. "my mother is hongeojjim get and my [dorm/숙소] in you eat. OKAY?" I love the way his brain works. he's being grammatical... in korean!!! "my dorm in" and the "eat" at the very end, you can tell what the sentence is in korean. he's just using google translate in his head and going for a literal translation - not even papago because papago is much better at kor-eng translations, it's really google translate.

(then he points to his head and tells kevin to THINK. what's not clicking, kevin!!! just THINK!!! bbangkev are perfect.)

and truly, the suffixes are just fun to me. maybe my romance language brain is just obsessed with conjugating things and changing the entire meaning by changing a syllable but listen... you can end a sentence three billion different ways in korean, many of which I don't even understand yet. there's stuff I learned specifically from reading eric's universe/bubble/fromm messages; he loves a 거든(요) like no one else, I hadn't even realized that ending existed before I noticed it in his messages. segyeah brought this clip back and I laughed because in 2020 I couldn't catch these details yet but sunwoo nails eric's way of speaking, including the 거든요.

I might come back to this at some point, I just wanted to express my eternal love for the MY HONGEOJJIM YOU EAT. OKAY? clip one more time. he's so younghoon in it!!! that reels he posted today was very younghoon too. the more younghoon he is, the more I love him. I love you, bread 🍞
