the album to conquer all albums. also I love TBZ

my very late thoughts on unexpected because the state of the fandom bummed me the fuck out during promotions. it doesn't help that I'm questioning myself over everything so at some point I was like, have I completely lost touch with reality... how aren't we celebrating this MASTERPIECE as it should be celebrated... am I losing it or is the fandom the insane one?

anyway. this is the gist of what I drafted a couple months ago:
is anyone else still SCREAMING THEIR HEADS OFF with this album or is it just me? with how often tbz talked about doing a new sound, how this was completely different from what they've done so far etc, I was honestly scared I wasn't gonna be into it lol because admittedly, I don't vibe with some of the most popular sounds in kpop. I was thinking oh man, tbz is gonna do a 2min-long title track in a genre I don't like, aren't they? that's okay, I'll support your dreams, boyz...

BUT THEN!!! they made an album I loved from start to finish. AND? they're promoting my favorite bside?! I'm obsessed with "rock and roll" and "miss demeanor", never in a million years did I think they'd do something like these songs. it's 100% my style, both of them.

what I feared might happen with this album actually ended up happening with i-dle, I listened to their new songs once and don't wanna hear them ever again lol but I genuinely loved every single track in unexpected. "rock and roll" was my immediate favorite, but my top3 ended up being that, "miss demeanor", and "nothing", and I think I'd say "nothing" is my favorite right now. I still can't believe we got a choreo and stages for one of my favorite tracks?! THANK YOU, TBZ!!!

at the same time, kinda depressing that they just don't talk about "nothing" after the kfandom threw a tantrum, and that they only ever mention "miss demeanor" to mock it. I guess they figured out a way to skirt around the issue of their own fans shitting on the music they were so excited to make, but man... that's just sad. I wish this album had been lauded as it deserved. it's one of my favorite tbz albums now.

feel the bass: FUN UNIT!!! this is such a fun combination, I'm obsessed with hearing jukev sing one after the other. their voices are great together! and god knows I'm not crazy about rap verses these days but sunric are SO GOOD here... I sing along to the GA GA GA GA! every time lol

VVV: if you dislike this song I'm sorry for the SAD and DEPRESSING life you live but this is such good fun. and it feels like a full, complete song, well-made, well-finished, it actually flows like a full song. I'm still not over how sunric got to do something different (eric going low, sunwoo going high) and how milcob sang the same lines so differently yet so like Them too. kevin's line during the watch me dash part is one of my favorites! and of course ERIC!!! after "trigger" this is so nice, he actually got to have lines, and good lines too T___T

I will say, though - I guess I was a little too optimistic thinking kevhak would have more of a chance to shine on title tracks with the new company lol at the same time, though, I'm reassured that kevin is happy himself. he was so excited about this album! he was so direct saying that's not an issue this time. line distribution discourse feels a little dumb at times, and for this album it sure did feel stupid. the younghoon solo stans (the bane of my existence) coming up with hashtags because he didn't have lines for the short MV for "nothing" when in reality he has the prettiest, most touching lines in the whole song? pls. let's all go outside to pet stray cats and breathe in some fresh air!!!

also: VVV being nearly 4 minutes long is A DREAM. nearly everything I wanted out of a title track.

starry night: the shortest song in the album which is a pity but it's lovely nonetheless. it IS a song you say "jacob helped produce it", it's very jacob-ey. eric's lines are so perfect for him...

ain't salty: the fancy instrumental, hello!!! I love it. and see what I mean, they really gave juyeon the perfect lines for his voice in this album! I loved all of his lines. him and jacob might've been the members I thought were best utilized, jacob is a SINGER who SINGS in this album for sure.

rose: if "starry night" is jacob-coded, this one is eric-coded to me lol the kind of thing he would've produced in my head. at the same time, it's such a beautiful sound, very group in their 8th year-esque. LOVE sangyeon's voice here, and hyunjae getting to sing a little differently than usual... (here and in "nothing" tbh, I love his lines!) bbangkyukev sound incredible too.

rock and roll: THIS IS MY SONGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG the beat is so FOR ME. juyeon and haknyeon in this song! jacob's lower tone! THAT CHORUS. I didn't pay much attention to it during the medley but once the album was out? I GASPED. this was 100% made for me, thank you, tbz!

nothing: loved from the very first listen, the MV is THE PRETTIEST ever... again: juyeon is so well used in this album. love eric's tone + delivery. JACOB, CHANGMIN, YOUNGHOON, HYUNJAE. chanhee gets the chorus often in the album, I think that's great. THE WAY HYUNJAE IS SINGINGGGGG!!! younghoon's part makes me wanna cry, he's perfect... eric has so many lines!!! KEVIN'S I THOUGHT THAT YOU COULD SAVE ME. haknyeon's lines!!!??? this is genuinely 4:18 of PERFECT LINES. I love, love, love this song. milkyu in the end make me tear up, ngl. I don't know why this song hits so hard but it does.

miss demeanor: jacob/sangyeon going into the chorus... juyeon's CUZ and lines... hyunjae in the chorus, then 97z... eric said during idol radio that he did the line distribution(?) here and that's cute of him because he nailed some of these choices, he Knows how to make good use of 97z. I really, really, really love this beat and vibe. according to tbz that means I'm old as fuck? fine then!!!

cross over: I truly, genuinely hope this replaces "timeless" during concerts... sorry to be the only "timeless" hater in the world, but this song is so sweet, and it sounds perfect for encores. it would probably make some members cry too which means it needs to be added to the setlist asap.

to sum it up, I loved the songs musically, from start to finish. and as a fan, I loved the way they used the members' voices - jacob was THE star of this album to me but I loved, loved, loved listening to the lines/the delivery of eric, hyunjae, juyeon, changmin, younghoon... it made me excited for the next albums too. the sky is the limit now, we got a jukevcobsunric unit!!! sangcobric's songs were in the album!!! they could do anything for the next releases, and I hope they do, and don't feel discouraged by whatever the fuck happened with the fandom this time around.

can you imagine some of these during concerts? can you imagine "feel the bass" performed at concert?! I can't imagine what section they would fit "miss demeanor" into but I'm sure they're adding it to the setlist at some point. they're most likely doing a concert before the year ends (no idea when they're touring - next year but without milbbang then?), and I'm curious to see what they're gonna do with the new songs.
