writing meme because what even is this year
that "what a monday, huh?" "captain, it's wednesday" image but it's me going "what a year, huh?" "bro, it's february".
january-february has been just me plummeting straight into a depressive episode, then personal life stressing me out of my mind a little further, then coming down with a cold... I almost couldn't buy a ticket for the online streaming of the b land! even THAT sucked the joy out of me before I managed to do it at the last second. and the news of sangyeon's enlistment was just :(
I really thought we'd have one more year with ot11 before we'd have to go through enlistment hell, I don't know why. I was dreaming so high thinking sangyeon would get more musicals and hoping we'd get an ot11 tour this year lol silly me. they did confirm we're getting member-produced songs in albums (kevin was so direct saying THIS COMPANY BELIEVES EACH MEMBER HAS POTENTIAL :) thank you kevin!), and they did consider a comeback first instead of the fanconcert, but god. I'm sad.
I've been writing a few things to distract myself. a writing meme feels like the perfect opportunity to ramble about that, so:
1. The last sentence you wrote
Casually, Sunwoo adds, "You don't need to tell me, just think of it yourself."
that's the right answer. HOWEVER... I have a terrible habit of stopping mid-sentence and the very next one is just:
Eric bites back the
oh I'm sure he BITES BACK. *does the shoulder step*
2. A character whose POV you’re currently exploring
I've been in a chanhee pov mood recently, now that I think about it? but also sunwoo! I started a new wip with him just because it's been a while and my sunwoo pov is a little rusty...
3. How you feel about your current WIP
the brain fog has been bad so I don't feel anything, I'm just . these are words. and I do feel a little out of practice, sort of? are we all sure I know how to write?
4. A story idea you haven’t written yet
some recent ones:
- juric canon compliant omegaverse in which eric presents as an alpha and doesn't take that super well. feat juyeon wearing his underwear because I mean...?
- juric (SORRY, I KNOW) where juyeon starts a new gig as an exotic dancer and eric is so very supportive. in my head I'm calling it a magic mike au.
- sangnyu dragons! kingdom politics and coup d'etats and chanhee finding an unlikely ally in sangyeon. and DRAGONS. shoutout to
greetingsfrommaars for planting the seed in my head and to
tullycat for watering it with ideas and suggestions :') <3
- kevric silly pwp for the LA collection, probably the last one I'll do for the collection. it's a really simple idea, I just haven't figured out how to go about it. (wait, is this my first actual kevric? it might be?? so that's why I'm unsure...)
5. First sentence of the fifth paragraph of an unpublished WIP
Working out helped for an hour or so, but now that Sangyeon is back home, chopping onions, he feels stupid all over again.
#mood
6. The word that appears the most in your current draft
depends on the draft. I think this will always be a name, right? there's a bunch of "sunwoo" in my most recent drafts lol
7. Your preferred writing fonts
these days I'm only using merriweather size 12-13 and preferably on 125-130% zoom. sometimes if I wanna change it up I'll do bree serif. on ellipsus the default font is literata and I think I like it? size 18 for that one, though... this post brought to you by the nearsighted gang!!!
8. If you had to write a sequel to a fic, you’d write one for…
I actually started one once! just never finished it, but I had a sequel planned for the sunhak royal au (burned about to burn still on fire or as I like to call it, batbsof). it'd be jukyu/jumilcob in which juyeon loses changmin and milcob take him under their wing... and into their bed. ba dum tss. the plot was inspired by the reveal catching fire stage and I really liked that since the first fic was inspired by the reveal MV. I got as far as 14k words in but then couldn't figure out where to go with the plot. pea-sized brain problems...
other than that, I got a couple comments on the moonbae enemies to lovers au saying they'd love to read a full-fledged fic for it and honestly, that's a fun idea! again, I'm not great with plot so who knows what I'd even do with it, but it could be a fun universe to explore.
9. Start to finish, how long did it take you to write the last fic you posted?
two days give or take for the bbangsang (ao3) and about a week for the sangnyu (dw)? that's considering I've been thinking about that sangnyu prompt for literal months, but I only managed to put it into words now.
10. What's the longest amount of time you’ve let a draft rest before you finished it?
I like to let it rest for at least a day, but sometimes I'll give it a week or more. to be fair, I don't do drafts in the sense I assume is being used here, I don't rewrite anything, but I let the text rest between a day and two weeks before I read it over to fix small details + go over spelling. I learned to let texts rest in college so hey, I'm using my degree for *something*!
11. A WIP you’d like to finish someday
STARES REALLY HARD AT THE SANGMILCOB. I'd actually love to finish the dollhouse/txf au junyu someday too, if that's ever happening.
12. A trope you’re really into right now
anything domestic. give me bedsharing and wearing each other's clothes around the house!!! give me meeting the family and hurt/comfort when someone has a cold.
13. A fandom you’re thinking about writing for
viviz, maybe? it's the only fandom I'd risk trying right now because for everything outside of kpop I'd want to explore canonverse and I'm not confident in my ability to pull that off lol like, yes I'd write yellowjackets (adult timeline), but I'd want to write about the actual plot, either missing scenes or just exploring past seasons, and I don't think I can. again: books and tv shows are much harder for me to explore in fic than rpf.
14. Where do you get your inspiration?
the usual (other fics, books, movies, tv shows) but also! my kpop boyz are an endless source of inspiration, the plot bunnies are a daily occurrence. and I'll also be completely honest, one of my most gemini traits is doing things out of spite or out of a desire to challenge myself. so for example, do I care a whole lot about omegaverse? not really. I rarely ever read it. but precisely because I don't go there, I feel like writing an omegaverse au now LOL just to challenge myself and see how I'd put my spin on it. my newest sunwoo draft is inspired by a movie and two types of aus that are very popular but I've never written myself.
15. Favourite weather for writing
when it's NOT hot, which is almost never. (pls save me.) (it's so hot right now I'm boiling in my clothes.)
16. Favourite place to write
as of now, I don't have one. my laptop is so slow I'm not using it anymore, I realized my phone is too big and heavy for me to feel comfortable writing on it (I genuinely despise typing on it), and I don't feel super inspired on the desktop computer, idk why? so technically, I like to write in bed, but since that's not happening often, I'm resorting to the computer - and therefore writing less and not for long. my phone really is so heavy??? or maybe I need to do some arm workouts. but man.
17. Talk about your writing and editing process
I usually start with a new doc, or if I'm not near my computer and don't feel like typing on my phone I write down some notes on a notebook. recently I made an account on ellipsus to see if I can finally leave gdocs and I like it so far!! my newest wips are all on ellipsus.
ok, so new doc made: I'll just write for as long as I can, preferably try to get it all out in one sitting. most of my smut works like that, and some of my older fics were completely written in one to three sittings. I found that if I take too long, if I try to write it piecemeal, chances are I'm gonna struggle to finish it... doing 8k at once works much better than doing 500 words/a day, for instance.
that's why I've been annoyed at myself lately, because since I can't sit down and write for long, I end up with scraps of fic that I haven't written enough of to think "ok, this is good, I should continue". I suck at beginnings!!! I can't write 700 words and expect future me to look at it and go "oh yes this is great, I know exactly what to do next"!!!
let's say I get it all out and finish it in two weeks, for example. while writing, I've been rereading it or at least giving it a once-over, because usually when I open the doc again I like to remind myself of what I've written. once it's done, I let it rest for a few days before I come back to fix things I already knew I had to fix from when I last read it: repeated expressions/words, weird turns of phrase, paragraphs I should've split in two, a placeholder last line, etc.
then I do find and replace to fix the em dashes. very important step!!! the em dash is my friend. after that, I use html-cleaner to prepare the text for ao3, spend some time filling out title + tags + a/n, and save as draft, if it's a fic meant to be published. (ellipsus has a "copy html" option, and even an ao3 export feature; that's part of the reason why I'm already partial to it.)
I usually read the draft on ao3 first to find anything amiss and sort of try to gather if the story makes sense at all? because one downside of not having someone beta the fic is that sometimes I'm genuinely worried if what I wrote only makes sense in my head. that's the most nervewracking part to me, because more often than not I'm doubting I wrote something coherent. sometimes I reread the fic *again* after it's posted JUST TO MAKE SURE, you never know, maybe I wrote complete nonsense!!!
and that's it. for fics I don't immediately post or wips, I sometimes go back to the doc to just to take a look around, check what I was doing, see it with fresh eyes. that might mean some minor editing, or pushing things further up or farther back on my wip rotation, etc.
18. If you keep them, share a deleted sentence or paragraph from a published fic
sangric bodyswap. I didn't wanna focus too much on the singing thing so I cut it all out from that scene:
milbbang footballer au. I forgot I almost wrote them going out on dates, TO THE AQUARIUM, EVEN!!! that's cute:
97z mafia au. looking at these and feeling good about the ultimate choices I made is great, the actual dialogue that ended up in the fic is much better than this:
jukev pirate au. I wrote kevin's pov for the part where he's separated from juyeon just to make sure what I had in mind would work:
19. The most interesting topic you’ve researched for a fic
pirate ships, probably? I like reading up on pirates so that was fun. doing research on football rules was interesting too, and very useful for when I was watching the world cups LOL and I liked looking up LGBTQ+ history from the 1990s, particularly in south korea/usa, for the 90s juric. it was very brief and very shallow research just to untangle some tiny plot points (chanhee was a student activist in the fic even if that was never clear!), but it was interesting nonetheless.
20. In what year did you publish your first fic?
man... somewhere between 2008-2009 iirc, I posted the first chapter of the last hp book rewritten from hermione's pov, but it wasn't anywhere people could actually find it, I think? the first fic posted to an actual fic website was in 2010. at least that I can recall?!
21. When did you publish your most recent fic?
the sangnyu for comment fest! the bbangsang on ao3 was on christmas.
22. Do you ever worry about public reaction to what you’re writing?
yes. but more so in the sense that I fear being incoherent, since I don't post anything too out there these days. years ago I'd post gory and violent stuff and I didn't worry much then, let alone now that I'm in my fluff, no mcd and no unhappy ending era lol
23. Pick three keywords that describe your writing
????????
24. How do you recharge when you’re not feeling creative?
reading fic! reading books too, watching movies!
25. Besides writing, what are your other hobbies?
I game a little bit? but I kinda suck at every single game LOL from bg3 to stardew valley to hero shooters. and I like translating things too.
26. Are you able to write with other people around?
yes but only if no one can see/read what I'm writing. it could be the blandest, most sfw thing, I get anxious if someone can read it over my shoulder.
27. Your favorite part of the writing process
the actual writing part! plotting and editing are harder, and I'm not great with outlines, so I have the most fun just putting words on paper. (on screen?) dialogues are my favorite and I love playing around with words and language. I'm the kind of reader who often enjoys the way something is written more than the plot itself, so as a writer I find it fun thinking about how to convey something.
28. Your least favorite part of the writing process
outlining and first paragraphs <3
29. How easy is it for you to come up with titles?
it's okay-ish! sometimes I struggle but not often. it definitely used to be worse.
30. Share a fic you’re especially proud of
the 90s juric is a bit of a favorite for many reasons. it was my way of coping with eric's hiatus, for starters, and it was also the first juric I ever finished and posted to ao3. and as sad as I was writing it, and as much as I struggled to develop the plot halfway through, I really like the end result now. I like the way I wrote it! which is such a character development moment on my part, I would never have said that years ago about anything I wrote lol but I do, I like that fic, and juyeon's dry, deadpan narration, and the ot11 found family-isms, and the 90s setting. the story happens in the year I was born so while I don't have memories of that exact time, I remember the early 00s and my reality looked a lot like that in terms of technology. even that detail is something I'm fond of whenever I go back to the fic.
honorable mentions to blue sky, cry baby cry, and if I had a heart too. the first has received so much love I'm really grateful for, and all three were just really fun to write without thinking much about it, I just let the characters write the plot themselves lol those always turn out to be my favorite plots.
just an addendum: very amused to realize I've added more pairings to my list of written ships in the past few months. if I had *planned* to do it, it wouldn't have gone that well LOL

january-february has been just me plummeting straight into a depressive episode, then personal life stressing me out of my mind a little further, then coming down with a cold... I almost couldn't buy a ticket for the online streaming of the b land! even THAT sucked the joy out of me before I managed to do it at the last second. and the news of sangyeon's enlistment was just :(

sangric bodyswap. I didn't wanna focus too much on the singing thing so I cut it all out from that scene:
"Wanna bet?”
Eric looks like he might say no, still scared and uncertain, so Sangyeon doesn’t wait for an answer. He rolls the chair towards the desk and wakes up the computer. A few clicks later, the instrumental to one of his favorite songs for practice starts coming out of the speakers. Sangyeon turns up the volume and glances at Eric. Then he starts to sing.
It is a bit weird, sure. He’s used to a different set of lungs, a tongue that doesn’t trip him, and a different pitch to his voice, but no matter—he makes it work just fine. Technique goes a long way, as does his confidence that he knows what he’s doing. He’s so familiar with this song, could sing it backwards if asked to, that his ease is apparent. Eric doesn’t interrupt him, watching a little enraptured as Sangyeon reminds him that Eric has had the same base training as all of them and has been a singer all along, even if one that never truly thought of himself that way.
He stops right after the chorus and pauses the music. “See what I mean? You can sing.”
Eric shakes his head. “I don’t believe you.”
“Come on, man… Why not?”
“Because you never said that before. When I was still me.”
Well. Sangyeon can’t argue with that. They’ve talked music over the years, yeah, sat down to eat and discuss songs, verses, lines, usually with the other members accompanying them, but never the kind of one-on-one about singing Sangyeon has had with Chanhee, or Jacob—or even Sunwoo, for that matter.
It saddens him a little that Eric not only noticed that, but that it weighed on him. “Eric, I’m—Who even cares what I think, anyway?”
“I do. I care,” Eric says immediately. “Your opinion matters to me, you know. Like, a lot."
milbbang footballer au. I forgot I almost wrote them going out on dates, TO THE AQUARIUM, EVEN!!! that's cute:
They make a habit out of it. The restaurant was a good call because there are no sneaky pics of them circulating on the internet the next day, but after that, they need to get creative. It’s testing the limits of how long they can go unnoticed in public, sure, but between Younghoon’s experience dealing with fame and Jaehyun’s overly cautious nature, they make it work. The aquarium gives them enough privacy to walk around unbothered; the riverside at night isn’t the most inconspicuous place in town but there’s enough people out enjoying the weather of early spring that they can get away with it.
97z mafia au. looking at these and feeling good about the ultimate choices I made is great, the actual dialogue that ended up in the fic is much better than this:
“Fuck, Younghoonie…”
“Are you sure about this?” Younghoon asks him, seemingly out of the blue, pulling his leg back.
Jaehyun makes an effort to focus. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
“You know why.”
Does he? Jaehyun looks for the answer in Younghoon’s face; he looks just as into it as Jaehyun feels, but there’s a tiny sliver of that hesitation from before. Like Younghoon expects him to say no any moment now.
Like he expects a rejection.
It strikes Jaehyun so suddenly, like a blow to the chest, that he feels a little idiotic it took him this long. Of course he knows what Younghoon is asking him--is it ok that it’s me and not him?
“I’m sure,” Jaehyun says, leaning down to catch his lips in a kiss, a slower one this time, to mark his words. “Are you?”
jukev pirate au. I wrote kevin's pov for the part where he's separated from juyeon just to make sure what I had in mind would work:
“He wouldn’t have done that if he didn’t want you to be safe,” Younghoon says, sitting down next to him on the couch.
It’s enough to give Kevin pause, but he doesn’t let it show. He downplays his surprise, pretending to be focused on the food instead.
“Who?”
“Juyeon,” Younghoon says. And now Kevin turns to him, surprised with the use of a first name. Not Captain Juyeon, or Lee Juyeon, or even “pirate”. Just Juyeon.
He knows him. Younghoon knows Juyeon.
“What do you want?”

the 90s juric is a bit of a favorite for many reasons. it was my way of coping with eric's hiatus, for starters, and it was also the first juric I ever finished and posted to ao3. and as sad as I was writing it, and as much as I struggled to develop the plot halfway through, I really like the end result now.
