blog: watching queendom 2 (s02e01, s02e02)
I need to start this off with a disclaimer: I'm the #1 survival show hater in the world. I can't stand this format. I hate hate hate competition shows where the main goal is to, uh, Be Better Than Someone Else, I Guess. that being said, I like to watch stuff with groups I'm into, and unfortunately for me, viviz and wjsn fit that criteria for queendom 2 lol I watched queendom 1 for mamamoo and ended up really liking all the girls + the overall vibe, so hey, let's try this again.
I've been putting it off for over a year (!) for several reasons but now that apparently there's going to be ANOTHER one of these (please, god, haven't we suffered enough?) I'm motivated again :') will I enjoy the whole voting/scores part of it? absolutely not. but good stages!! girls interacting!! new song arrangements!! that part should be fun.
episode 1 took me literally a handful of tries because the mnet editing is so old and so boring to me but hey! at least hyolyn is there to make things less terrible. thank you, queen!!! I love the energy you're bringing to this, you know how stressful it all is and how meaningful it is to just be nice to your hoobaes. I wish that was the mindset of every survival show contestant ever.

so my favorite stages, in the other they were performed:
viviz - time for the moon night + rough
some really beautiful styling, a gorgeous arrangement, and the choreo as usual on point. they've always been great performers so this shouldn't surprise me but I got chills watching this stage. on the one hand, I wish that back in 2015 I had the music taste I have today so I could appreciate gfriend, but on the other... well, maybe it's a good thing I wasn't a buddy lol that disband would have DEPRESSED me. it already made me sad and I was just starting to get into their music when it happened. watching this made me think gfriend should've been on queendom 2, not just viviz.
hyolyn - touch my body
are you KIDDING ME? 10/10, my favorite stage this round for sure. just like with viviz I've always known hyolyn to be a good performer - the fact that she planned the entire performance here AND made use of the entire stage only made me love it more. she really filled that stage as a solo act, even more so than some of the groups? so impressive. I loved her outfit too, she looks gorgeous here.
wjsn - as you wish
listen, just like with viviz/gfriend, I'm really late to the wjsn party (got into them with "hmph!" and "unnatural") but I love them. I love watching them on stage and their discography is now one of my favorite discographies in kpop. them and viviz are the reason why I'm even watching this show in the first place so seeing them cry as if they didn't put up an INCREDIBLE stage because the stress of preparing for this got to them was so heartbreaking. I didn't even notice the stage was slippery! that's how good I think they are on stage.
loona - paint the town
absolutely wild that mnet left them out of the first round. this was so good!!! the only reason I was never into loona was because I couldn't get into their music, so this arrangement made me happy, I LOVED it. their outfits were the prettiest this round too. I really, really wish mnet had waited until everyone had recovered to film the first round, this deserved to be seen and praised by the other artists :c

this kind of show where a bunch of artists perform different, creative stages would be amazing if the stakes weren't so high and if these groups weren't going through the wringer constantly. can we get a queendom 3 where the girls are there just to swap songs (and phone numbers)? I don't care who wins, let them just go wild with their performances!!! give me new arrangements and random covers!!! make a show where people are happy for once, mnet!!!
my overall thoughts for these first two episodes are that yeah, the voting each other down sucks, and I still dislike the camerawork on mnet. not even the editing part (that we can all agree is tired and overdone), but just the way they film the stages. mcountdown stages are my least favorite of any comeback precisely because I think the camerawork is just so... subpar? in comparison to the others. but anyway. I don't know why I even expect anything different.
and on a last note: this is my first time seeing kep1er and I kinda wish it was under different circumstances... the show goes to great lengths to tell us they're NOT there because they're from mnet but, I mean? they are, though? and that's unfair to the kep1er girls more than anything. it's the same thing they did to to1 back in rtk :( let rookies be rookies, my man. why put them through this.
