love my gay fics #mygayfics
had the very funny experience of telling irl friends that I write "yaoi fic". idk why I found that so amusing. one of them asked me where I post them ("ao3" "ah, I know that") and another asked me how I write things in general, where I get the inspiration from, and I didn't know how to answer other than "well, the material is already there" LOL because honestly!! it really is. I just move things around in my head but it's all pretty much done for me... fic is such a vibe that explaining it to people not immersed in the universe feels kinda weird.
for instance, I can't remember if I've ever talked about that steampunk fic I wrote (I thought I had?), but I was inspired by three books for the universe: cherie priest's boneshaker and ganymede, from her clockwork century novels, and elizabeth bear's karen memory. the constructs were 100% inspired by that one scene in karen memory, the dangerous fog is from cherie priest's series, and juyeon as a pilot was partly because of ganymede and partly because well. it's juyeon, our almost-pilot.
that's a part of writing/reading fanfic that I find so fun: fitting pieces of the puzzle together. how would this person behave in this context with these constraints and these stakes? how would this universe work if this thing was different, or the focus was a different town, or the technology didn't work the same way? that sounds so gemini of me, now that I'm typing it out LOL but it IS fun!!
anyway. what a fascinating turn of events. who knew I'd be discussing yaoi with irls from high school. should I introduce them to heated rivalry next?
