That they work well together Juyeon already knew; it doesn’t mean it’s any less of a surprise every time.
His parents’ kitchen isn’t particularly small, but they still need to brush past each other when Chanhee comes in carrying empty glasses with the air of someone with a plan. Juyeon gets the plates he was looking for and they switch sides again when Juyeon goes for the fridge and Chanhee goes for the sink; they move in sync, a dance they know all the steps to by now.
It makes Juyeon smile. When he takes the pie out of the fridge, Chanhee is there to hold the door open for him. He’s still eyeing the kitchen, biting his bottom lip in thought, so Juyeon asks, “What is it? Do you need anything?”
“I’m wondering if we can whip something up…” Chanhee says, distracted. He squeezes past Juyeon again to reach the cupboards on the right. “Do you think they have chocolate?”
“Whip something up? Why?” Juyeon looks down at the pie he’s in the process of transferring to a large, more table-appropriate dish. “We brought pie.”
Chanhee turns to him, worried. “Lemon pie! What if your brother doesn’t like it?”
“He can help himself to the ice cream in the freezer…”
Chanhee chuckles, but it’s only for a second before it turns into a groan. “He’s gonna hate it.”
“Hey,” Juyeon calls softly, stepping up to reach his boyfriend and wrap his arms around him. Chanhee still has that worried look about him, forehead creased like this is a full-blown crisis he needs to work through and not just Sunday lunch with Juyeon’s family. “Teens hate everything, it’s nothing personal.”
“He’s twenty-one, Juyeon.”
“And he loves you,” Juyeon says, undeterred. He kisses Chanhee’s cheek. “They all do, pie or no pie.”
Chanhee relaxes a little bit in his arms. He sighs. “Next time we're going with chocolate. Or strawberry. We know for a fact your mom likes strawberry.”
She does. Juyeon kisses Chanhee’s cheek again and feels Chanhee relax a bit more, warmth blooming in his chest at the reminder that he’s here, holding the most loving, most thoughtful person in the world in his arms.
“I love you, you know?”
“Really? I wouldn’t have guessed,” Chanhee teases with a smile. He reaches up to touch Juyeon’s cheek and gives him a brief peck on the lips. And because he knows Juyeon is waiting, like he always is after saying those words first, he adds, “And I love you too, baby.”
