30 songs challenge #1
idea and questions taken from here! but instead of 30 days of songs, I'm just doing 30 songs whenever. if I can do it one a day, great! but let's not pretend I'll be that disciplined about it. I'll also combine both lists (included down below) and pick and choose which questions to answer. the first list is at least a decade old so let's just adapt as we go!!
I have several favorite songs, there's no way to choose only one - I could list about a dozen off the top of my head here. but since I like answering memes from time to time, I've taken to answering this question with janelle monáe's "sincerely, jane" for simplicity's sake.
I've been thinking about it, trying to understand why I use that song as the Representative Song out of my favorites... and I think it's because it combines a few things I absolutely adore in music: (1) bassy melody + (2) instruments + (3) orchestra-like sound + (4) powerful singing (there must be a technical term for it but best I can describe it as is "the opposite of whisper-singing"? that's my favorite kind of singing) + (5) lyrics that read like a story/narrative.
anything with instruments or even vaguely orchestra-adjacent has a higher chance of working for me. for example: hans zimmer's "the kraken" is one of my favorite songs, I think listening to it in theaters as a preteen changed me forever; I love love love muse's "pressure" but especially the UCLA band version of it.
same with the singing, singers using all of their lungs and then some are my favorite thing:
(solar and sangyeon are my favorite kpop vocalists and I'd pay obscene amounts of money to watch their musicals if I had the chance... I've been dreaming of musical actor sangyeon for years precisely because I think he suits it so well!!!)
and there are classic examples of lyrics with narratives (bohemian rhapsody, space oddity, hotel california, literally any song from a musical) but two of my favorites in english:
so long story short: "sincerely, jane" checks so many boxes for me that I can listen to it on repeat for hours and not get tired of it. and it feels right to choose it as my favorite song even if it's just one of many - it's a good pick!! and SUCH a good song all around.
